Our annual Witches’ Tea is one of the most fun events of the year for me. I LOVE Halloween. And, as a retailer it is a sort of unofficial kick-off for the big things that come with fourth quarter. But, more importantly, as we conduct our 4th annual Witches’ Tea we now have kids all over looking forward to the day the Silver Barn is turned over to them to create all kinds of fun things with pumpkins, eat goodies and not have to watch mom doing that boring shopping stuff! THIS is what the store is all about, creating events that create memories. So, on Saturday we kick off the holiday season of shopping for us, and another season of memories for our littlest customers. Here we go again!

From lamps based on vintage pictures and postcards at Found Images, to vintage transit route signs turned into pillows, chairs, ottomans, you name it, at British Route Signs Designs, I found myself falling in love with stuff all over the place!!
Marburger is one of those design events that celebrates the special and I think everyone should stroll the aisles at least once in their life. Now, let’s see how much I brought home….
We salute the brides, we honor the new babies, but I’m actually most excited about a new salute we have initiated at Silver Barn this year. We are saluting the graduating Seniors of Columbus High, as well as the other area high schools – Rice and Weimar High School.
Midway through our first year at Silver Barn my daughter graduated from TCU and began her own apparel boutique called Velvet Frog. Since we weren’t sure what the girls in Columbus might be interested in, Cydney formed a Velvet Frog Teen Board to give her input as to what she might want to carry. Those girls are now graduating from high school, Velvet Frog offers the best in apparel for high school to, well, everyone, and Silver Barn is starting our fourth year in business! Needless to say, these girls have special meaning. We will continue our Senior Girl Gift Registry, we will love all the girls who come in and excitedly put together a list of things they’d like to receive for graduation, but the class of 2011 will hold a special place in our heart.
Our seasonal tree features the Columbus Cardinal ornament which benefits the Columbus Booster club as well as ornaments representing the colleges of their choice. Below the tree we have filled the table and surrounding area with an array of goodies all college bound girls need to help keep them organized and ready for the beginning of a new era in their life. Each girl registered also has a frame ornament in the tree with their name, college, degree plan and career plan included. While you may not be able to read the small frames, we put them there as a symbol of pride. We are sending out into the world some wonderful young ladies and we hope each and every one achieves all their dreams.
So, for three days I was shown the love – and the love that goes into their products. (Oh, I’d say my Coach bag has a lot of love in it too – mostly my hard earned cash I once loved – but there are lots of products that are painstakingly created.) No, what I mean by the Brighton love is how every employee there enjoys working for Brighton. Every employee takes pride in what they create. From Beatriz and her handbags, to Jerry Kohl, owner and creator of Brighton, it was the kind of place we would want to work if we didn’t work for ourselves. When you see the products and what goes in to creating each earring, bracelet, charm, handbag and more, it makes it that much more likely we’d go home and tell all of our customers about this wonderful company creating a wonderful product. Now THAT is how you sell a product! Thanks Brighton
Sound like an advertisement for Brighton? Probably, but The Silver Barn is all about selling a quality product that is unique and brings joy. Just take a look at The Silver Barn Facebook page and see some of the pics from my visit to the California factory. See if you don’t agree – there’s a lot of love in those products.
So, what did I see this week? Fabulous painted furniture, some of which will soon be moving to The Silver Barn. Nora Fleming tableware with her fabulous accessories. Tooth fairy pillows for those valuable cash trading teeth. Fabulous new soy-beeswax candles filling vintage-looking milk bottles in yummy scents and fabulous new dog bowls that will be hand painted to my specifications….”I bark for Aggies,” “I bark for Frogs” should give you a hint of what is to come. Oh, and get ready to celebrate the 75 anniversary of Peter Rabbit with us.
2011 looks to be another great year for Silver Barn with loads of more fun and excitement coming in every box. Get ready UPS and FedEx! We look forward to seeing all of our customers/friends soon.
But, once you intervene and help merge experience feeding 20 with experience of snacking for 20, you are proud of all you have accomplished on behalf of a future happy family.
So, tonight, I salute our first bride and groom of 2011. I’m lucky to be in a small town where I have gotten to know both families and I feel like I’m watching one of my own prepare for this exciting event. I hope I always treat each bride, each mother-of-the-bride, mother-of-the-groom, and yes, groom, as if they are members of my own family. This year we will expand to have fun kitchen goodies – perfect for that first turkey dinner for the family…or microwave brownies for two. And, we’ll work to bring all of that online so everyone can celebrate with our brides.
Welcome to the new year…welcome all of our future Mr.’s & Mrs.’s, we are waiting to help make your registry as much fun as finding the perfect dress and planning they honeymoon! Well, close!!
